Lemur
A. Lemurs are forest creatures, many from are Madagascar’s tropical rainforests. They are herbivores and eat anything from trees to flowers in these rainforests.
B. The lemur has strong hands and fingers help them to climb through trees. They also have very muscular legs for jumping. They use their legs and fingers to jump back and forth through trees.
C. This trait can be viewed as an adaptation because rainforests are all trees and without the strength in their legs and long finger tips to grip the lemur could not get around in this environment.
D.
Spider Monkey
A. The Spider Monkey comes from the southern portions of Mexico, Bolivia, and Brazil’s Matto Grosso. For this monkey the tropical rainforest provides a comfortable environment.
B. The Spider Monkey grows between fifteen and twenty-five inches tall. Their tail is between 20 and 35 inches long. They weigh twelve to sixteen pounds and have very small heads. Its fur is not soft and silky because it doesn’t have an underfur. Their hands have no thumbs, and the clitoris of the female is extremely elongated and visible.
C. The long tail trait is adaptive because without thumbs the monkey would not be able to swing from tree to tree so they wrap their tail around the branches instead.
D.
Baboon
A. Baboons are found a variety of habitats. The major requirements are there need to be water sources and safe sleeping places in either tall trees or on cliff faces. When water is readily available, baboons drink every day or two, but they can survive for long periods by licking the night dew from their fur.
B. Baboons grow 14-30 inches at the shoulder. All baboons have a strong torso, a snout-like face, the same dentition with long, sharp canine teeth, powerful jaws, a ground-walking habit, coarse body hair, a naked rump, and a similar social organization.
C. These are adaptive traits because they don’t need to be small to jump from tree to tree instead they need to be strong an stout to walk on the ground. They also have no tail because they don’t live in trees.
D.
As you can see depending on where the primate lives shows whether they are big and strong or small and light. Those that walk on the ground do not have tails but a more sturdy body. Where those who spend their day in the tree have tails and are lightweight to be able to soar through the air.
Missing a few components of the assignment (gibbon, chimp and summary). Good description of body shape and size. I would have also liked to see a discussion of sexual dimorphism in these primate groupings.
ReplyDeleteYou did really well in explaining the basic character traits of these primates. Primates are all very different from each other in many ways. For example look how different lemurs are than spider monkeys. Lemurs use their legs and arms to grip trees while spider monkeys use their tails to hang down.
